Op een rustige dag in het parochiecentrum traden acht enthousiastelingen en een arbiter aan om het nieuwe jaar op schaakgebied alvast goed in te zetten.
A lot of new faces could be seen on the second day of the Rapid championship. Jef paid us a visit, as well as ‘seniors’ Jan and Chris who without doubt have been scharpening their skills for the national league which resumes next week. Chris should not be confused with Kris, who came eager to defend his rapid title. Patrick and Stief upheld the family honour. Sylvin ensured that all things would kick off smoothly.
Pieter, full of confidence, thought he could take us all on using only his left hand. A little accident after a night out left him injured at his right shoulder. Luckily, you need only one hand to play. Finally, the name and fame of Rokade Westerlo is spreading around the world. We were joined on Friday by Marc Boudreau, a Canadian computer specialist and avid chess enthousiast who visits Belgium each year during December/January. Typical for chess players (?) Marc was welcomed by the standard ‘Welcome to the club. What is your rating?’ followed only afterwards by more mundane conversation such as ‘who are you’, ‘where are you from’ and ‘what brings you here’ 🙂 In any case, on to the tournament:
Het toernooi was fel bevochten, er viel geen enkele remise. Dit maal was Kris domiant op het rapidtempo, hij won al zijn partijen. Stief pakte de tweede plaats met 6 uit 7. In de middenmoot was een hevige strijd aan de gang, waarbij iedereen punten van iedereen aan het afsnoepen was. Pieter en Jef vochten vaak tegen de wegtikkende seconden: het langzame tempo ligt hen duidelijk beter. Jan hoorde je dan weer bij momenten iets te enthousiast op de klok duwen. De partij tegen nieuweling Marc was interessant, omdat je op voorhand niet wist wat te verwachten.

Hiermee verlengt Kris zijn rapidtitel met een gecombineerd totaal van 12 uit 13. Proficiat!
Na twee dagen vol rapidplezier, worden de komende weken nog meer clubtitels verdeeld: blitz, fisherandom, en dobbelschaak. Volgende week is het om ter minste stukken wegblunderen in het blitzkampioenschap: allen van harte welkom!
